Using the Graphs Wizard

Once data has been entered into a worksheet, graphical representation of that data can be generated in various forms.

  1. Open the file “Excel Workshop Files”
  2. Click on the Sales worksheet tab
  3. Select the range of cells that you need to graph.  You can select non-contiguous cells by holding down the Ctrl key when you highlight the cells.

  1. Click on the Chart Wizard icon, wizard icon

  1. (For this exercise) Select the first choice in the Chart Sub-type window, a standard Column graph
  2. Click Next
  3. Based on the range of cells you selected, Excel creates the initial graph for you.

  1. Click Next
  2. Notice all the Tabs in the Step 3 window.  You have the options to make changes to any or these areas of the graph.
  3. In Step 3, Chart Option: Titles,  you enter a name for the X and Y axis – this is optional.  Sometimes the data presented is obvious.  In the figure below the X axis is obviously names of cities but what the numbers represents is not so obvious, so you may want to type in a title.

  1. Click Next

  1. The above figure is still part of Step 3 – changing any of the specifics under those tabs is optional. 
  2. Click Next

  1. Select As Object in: then Click Finish

  1. The above figure shows the graph inserted into the worksheet.  You can edit any part of the graph by right clicking on the background of the chart:
