Drives me crazy, hope you can suggest something. Now, when you start Word, it will pick up settings and macros from the old 2003 NORMAL.DOT and import them into the new NORMAL.DOTM it is generating. Word is fine for home users, but it is not a professional user's application, in my opinion. It happens at the most inconvenient time -- frequently when up against deadlines. If you find it, delete it. It's not a convenient fix for me though, because I am constantly working with Preview Pane open since I am referring to other word docs located in the same folder as I simply opened my template file, converted it up, then saved it. Can't thank you enough. Enter "doc" Select Advanced and in the drop down select Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Document. But all this means that M$ again shoots it foot: *.dot is smth that I, personally, had been creating for years (I used even MS Word 5 for DOS!!!) -- and well duh!!??

My experience is that saving then inserting is a safer practice. Click on the Office button at the upper left of the Word window. Your method 2 is a fix for the problem because when Word starts and no NORMAL.DOT(M) is present, it automatically generates a new one from hard coded values in the program in Word 2007, when you click "Word options" from the dropdown, in there, there is no "general options", it says popular..
