Open RegEdit.exe Browse to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\DefaultIcon -OR- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\DefaultIcon This will show you where the computer is trying to find the icons. so I can'nt try that as a method to correct this problem. Then my friend suggested me to use MS Word Recovery Tool to repair and recover the corrupt, damaged or inaccessible Word documents of any formats like DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOTX and It was the "Detect and Repair" function, that solved the problem. Grif,I must admit that I have not installed Service Pack 3.I think I will uninstall Word and follow your advice about reinstalling it and applying the service updates. And...no pdf for me.
