Well, I have the same problem or at least similar. Other common causes are dirty RAM contacts, dodgy IDE or SATA cables, bloated mainboard capacitors, ceased AGP or PCIe fans (overheating GPU) and faulty PSU's.. (the list can go on actually) Because you used the registry file that the Setup program created, this registry does not know that these restore points exist and are available.
This turned out to be harder than expected because the Windows NFTS disks are only readable in Linux, but not easily writable. The drive was fine on another computer (chkdsk, fun with Partition Manager, backing up the data, reformatting, repartitioning, restoring data, same boot behavior).
