it appears that i have fixed the problem by disabling a startup on my computer, namely the logitechquickcam thing, hope it doesn't xxxxxx up my computer though. I can wake up in the morning, and the system still isn't alseep. The monitor will be put to sleep, but not the system itself. Vista Won't Sleep Automatically Right-click on your network adapter entry and select Properties. It's noisy as hell and must consume megawatts of power. One position for S1 Sleep the other for S3.
