But when I tried to access the external hard drive it says "Access denied" on virtual disk manager. You might have the SATA ports disabled in the BIOS. i dont know if it mathers but the old hdd has got an ide connection and a sata one, but it worked fine on a sata cable before. This WD Elements USB hard drive was working fine. My hard drive works on other computers and has worked on my laptop in the past but has done this a few times. thanks for saving my life, my usb drive packed with 3 months of college work on it & i've rescued it & now learnt to copy it & back it up. Well, you might need that port one day! But its when its enabled, I get an error - auto-sensing slave hard disk drive, strike F1 to continue or F2 to change settings. I went through your steps above to add access to the external hard drive from my work laptop which is a PC. Re formating as i write this!.. Also I've replaced my power.
